I believe music lessons of any form should be all about what the student wants to accomplish, rather than a strict curriculum. Of course, there is a proper place for describing technique, scales, etc, but once a basic understanding is achieved I like to delve into a students specific passion. This may be music theory, composition, a specific style, a specific bass technique, or something entirely different. I lean heavily on right and left hand technique. I teach finger style/Classical and flat-picking. With great guitar technique they can learn how to play any kind of music. I teach exercises that help improve all aspect of playing. I come from a classical background, however, my teachers taught me how to improvise and write music.
