I also use Hal Leonard and other methods that may be more appropriate for some students. I use the song-by-song method: I have my students choose a number of songs they want to learn, and I teach them how to play those songs one by one, learning the basics of guitar along the way. For intermediate students, I would use the same method, but encourage them to choose more complex songs.
