If the student is having a hard time finding interest in the instrument through disciplines, I start them off with various ear training games to get them to make connections between the music inside of them and the guitar or bass as a constructive outlet. This generally creates a foundation that has room for disciplines. Though my specialty is in music composition, my undergraduate degree is in guitar and choral education, and I have been teaching guitar for over 10 years, to students from 5 - 80. I am currently an adjunct professor at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY, and teach guitar and bass lessons / classes, songwriting, music composition, and music theory.
