If the student is having a hard time finding interest in the instrument through disciplines, I start them off with various ear training games to get them to make connections between the music inside of them and the guitar or bass as a constructive outlet. This generally creates a foundation that has room for disciplines. For adult students I seek to find what the students is most interested in (classical, jazz, rock, bass nova, etc.), and then go from there in terms of finding repertoire and creating my own custom lessons plans, centered around the student's goals. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with a method book geared specifically for children.
