I have been involved with music since middle school, where I participated in marching band. I continued in marching band up to my junior year of college. In high school I began working with my church's worship team, first as a percussionist, then as an acoustic guitarist. I began training in basic music theory at this time as well. For children who want to play violin and piano, I start with the suzuki method and try to find some music that they will identify with, like disney music or the soundtrack to frozen. For children who want to play guitar, I start by teaching them the essentials in person and giving them notes to practice from (Names of strings and chords, strumming patterns and music reading). As I'm struggling to describe my teaching style, I'm realizing that it is very adaptable as I am teaching such a variety of learners. I have found so much joy in music and am motivated to see my students succeed and move past the repetitive beginner stage to actual music making and a tool they can use in their lives. Though I have been teaching for over two decade years, I am far from feeling like a burn-out.  In fact, the more I teach, the more intrigued I become with the learning process, and I am constantly re-tooling my approach in order to help my students learn more effectively. My methods are unique and effective. First I share with my students the history and culture of the instrument. Then I teach how the instrument works, explaining every detail. I use simple exercises that quickly ingrain a foundation for progression. Next I build confidence by playing along in collaboration, while teaching synchronization and tempo.
