As a teacher, I bring with me over 13 years of experience working with violinists ranging from young beginners to advanced, conservatory-level musicians. Melissa has maintained a full private teaching studio since 1999. She is currently on faculty at the Third Street Music School Settlement in NYC. She has been on the faculty of The European School of Music in Los Angeles, and acted as an visiting teaching artist in the LA Unified School District through a program funded by the Young Musicians' Foundation in Los Angeles. Melissa is also a member of the New York based Artemis Chamber Ensemble, plays regularly with numerous orchestras in the tri-state area, and has collaborated with the Flexible Orchestra for several commissioned world premieres. I don't have a singular method because every student is different. At the beginning of my lessons with a new student we will begin getting to know each other. Then we try different things. Some students are naturals at imitating what they hear, so we play to those strengths. Other students are more comfortable with structure and math, so we take that route instead. I also taught group violin lessons through the YOURS El Sistema Project, Skinner North Classical School and South Loop Elementary School. I was a sectional coach for Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra and University of Illinois at Chicago. I teach in the style of Mimi Zweig from Indiana University, which focuses on natural physical motions nurtured in a non-judgmental environment. The goal is to play with complete freedom and independence.
