I began teaching private lessons part-timewhen I was still in high school on Long Island. I have taught in elementary day care in the early 1990's and taught in public schools elementary general music and chorus, beginning instrumental music at the elementary level, as well as middle school orchestra in the San Lorenzo Unified School District. I use the Suzuki Beginning books for cello and double bass students. For guitar and bass guitar, I use Hal Leornard's Essential Elements. The easy-to-understand and interactive nature of the Essential Elements books make them a great teaching tool. For piano students, I use the Czerny beginner etudes. My lesson plans usually include a warm-up, a review of last week's assignment to verify that the student has practiced, the main piece the student is playing, and usually something fun to sightread in the last 5 minutes of the lesson. For young students, I use a Suzuki Method hybrid, meaning I incorporate additional note-reading and music theory elements while using the Suzuki Violin books and Suzuki's core values of imitation and ear training. I also supplement with many pieces outside of the Suzuki Method, including folk, blues, fiddle, and other styles. As students progress I include traditional etudes, technique studies and scales. My ultimate goal is to give my students all the tools they need to play and learn pieces on their own, and to that end I ensure they fully comprehend and master each step of learning before introducing new concepts.
