The approach, overall, is to drive toward the student's goal. When someone wants to learn how to play an instrument well enough to play in a band or orchestra, I usually consider two needs - playing music and interpreting written music. For beginning students who are children ages 7 and up without parent support during home practice, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. After Book 5, I tend to use conservatory repertoire such as technique books ( Sevcik, Hrimaly), Scale Books, Etudes, and concertos. When it comes to keeping my students interested, I try to find songs that my students are interested in learning. I find those songs according to their level and the technique I want to teach them and then move on from there. Read More

I truly believe that sheet music, is one of the biggest hurdles of music education, and drives up the cost. Based on the fundamental teaching of Suzuki, Paul Roland, and the sensibilities of modern music, my pedagogy features composers from all eras. Even beginning strings will learn different styles very early in their pedagogy, and it will inherit the strengths of each particular instrument. Read More
