My fourteen years as a strings teacher has included both private lessons and public school settings. Many of his students have gone on to be involved in regional orchestras, Houston Youth Symphony, and university orchestras. For beginning students who are children, I usually start with Leonards Essential Elements. Once my student understands the fundamentals I will begin to introduce scales, etudes, and solo pieces that are appropriate for their level. I also love to throw in a fun piece (a favorite song or something from the radio) at the end of my lessons. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in and focus on those areas. My lessons are very structured and fun. I incorporate games, visual aids, physical application, and live demonstrations to help appeal to the different styles. I do expect a high level of commitment from students while still being understanding that life doesnt always allow us to practice hours and hours a day. Since I do provide a lot of information within each lesson, I add a 5 minute break (if needed) to help clear the mind or just rest the eyes/arms since staring at music for a long period of time or holding up an instrument for a long period of time can be quite taxing.
