Hello there! I am a current VCU student in the Musical Education course of study with an interest in teaching younger and older students alike, with a focus on particularly reaching neurodivergent students. I'm currently a junior, with 10 years of viola performance and 8 years of violin performance. I've given performances both solo and chamber in the Singelton Center for the Performing Arts, along with side gigs. My teaching style is full of open communication. I think that it is important that students set goals for themselves. I allow my students to pieces that they want to play. Students need to be able to see their own progress. I know that not every student will be outwardly excited, but I know that every student feels internally great about accomplishing goals. I choose to work step by step. Not to force them or pressure them on anything. As I mentioned above, having this balance between having fun, enyoing and learning how to be responsible and dedicated, is healthy and efficient! Important is to understand that to learn an instrument, you also need to practice, at least 30 min per day and not just only wanting to have the lesson, because the progress will be very minimal and slow, and the learning process will become very boring. I try to cater to the each student's particular needs. For beginning students that are children I typically start with the Essential Elements Strings Book 1 in combination with Suzuki first book. As every student progresses at a different pace, I adjust my teaching curriculum accordingly. Having that in mind, I decide on the next step, usually some solo repertoire, as well as some more etudes and scales.  For adults, I tend to go with what they are particularly interested in, as well as incorporating learning basic music reading and playing skills. I have 12 years of experience teaching at all levels. I encourage my students to participate in recitals, competitions, and orchestra auditions to gain performance experience and to help motivate them to practice. I also find that performing can give students a sense of accomplishment and seeing their peers perform can be inspiring. I usually host two recitals yearly.
