I began teaching trumpet in 1999. I have studied with: Lin Biviano (Buddy Rich, Lawrence Welk, Woody Herman) Larry Hudson (Rouge Valley Symphony), George Recker (Lincoln Center, Eugene Symphony), David Bender (Eugene Symphony), and I have taken individual lessons from Fred Sauter (Oregon Symphony) and Charles Schluter (Chigaco Symphony) I studied piano and Jazz Theory with Toby Konigsberg, recording artist and Jazz piano instructor at the University of Oregon. I have taught in one-on-one lessons, large group rehearsals, and everywhere in between. I started my teaching with a group of peers and professors while studying my undergraduate Music Education degree. We worked as a group to teach children ages six through 16 how to play violin/cello and perform as group. As a teacher, I have learned the last 4 years that you can't expect a student to just know something right away. It takes time, and students have to take it at their own pace. Sometimes, you have to differentiate instruction often, until the student starts to understand something. So, I find it is important to be student-centered and focus on the goals they can achieve, little at a time. As a teacher, I believe in supporting the student to be the best they can be with positive reinforcement rather than using pressure and guilt to make the student practice. My teaching philosophy stems from a couple of core values: 1. fostering curiosity & 2. Building the student's confidence as a student, artist, and human so that they may follow their curiosity in the direction of their dreams. My method of teaching begins with establishing a students learning strengths (auditory, visual, kin-aesthetic, etc.). From there I can more thoroughly formulate and personalize each lesson for success. With students who are just starting out on Trumpet or in their early stages, I emphasize a large focus on establishing a strong foundation with fundamentals.
