I am a middle school band director that has over 20 years experience. I love sharing my love of music. I graduated from Longwood University with a Bachelor of Music degree in Instrumental Education. I also have a Masters of Music degree from Virginia Commonwealth University in Instrumental/Choral Education. For children, my foundational methods include Leonard, Krueger, Clarke, Arban, Reinhardt, Rizzetto, Pearson, and Rubank. Solo and ensemble repertoire is introduced at the appropriate time. Time is also spent on improvisation, writing original compositions, and learning music that the students have brought to the lesson. For adults, we focus on what students are interested in working on, regardless of their ability level. Many adults want to spend part of the lesson working with the foundational methods, and spend part of the lesson learning one or two pieces of music. Read More

For students of all ages I use a combination of the student's own personal experience with music along with trumpet specific brass pedagogy to achieve a student's personal goals. One of the first discussions we have is what kind of music the student likes/dislikes, what kinds of music they've performed and/or studied, and what their individual goals are as a musician. From there we collaborate to tailor a custom plan for the student; parts of this plan include a warm up routine and practice schedule, short term and long term goals, frequent listening suggestions and aural analysis, and repertoire and projects that are tailor made to be applicable to a student's interests.
