Once the students have learned the basics, I play for them several pieces they would want to play for the next recital coming up so they can have an idea of what they like. For Intermediate players, I love the Dozen a Day collection, Hanon, and Alfred books. Every student no matter the age must have a solid foundation of fundamentals. If the technical foundation doesn’t exist, then it is much harder to play music that we love. Development doesn’t happen overnight, but rather it is a lifelong process. I started playing music more than 40 years ago. I taught the choir at my church for years, leading them in festivals and church performances. I have trained singers who wanted to perform in competitions,. I have taught children who wanted to play for fun as a music option and adults who wanted to improve their proficiency in piano. I generally use a method book for teaching band or orchestral private students. I also use other resources depending on the needs of the student. I always ask my students what they want to achieve and base my teaching on those goals. ( Of course, I provide guidance in making some of those goals!)
