I encourage students to do their absolute best but to not push themselves too hard. When you're learning an instrument, it's not always going to be easy. It's important that students can still have fun when they're learning. That's why I give music to students that I know can be accomplished. I believe that my students should have high expectations and have fun while completing goals. I make sure lessons are fun and progressive. I hold my students to high expectations so when they meet their goal they actually kill two birds with one stone (ex: figuring out a difficult passage in school music while progressing in technique exercises). I tailor my teaching to each student's needs and interests. I emphasize overall musicianship in addition to learning to the fundamentals of the particular instrument, splitting most lessons 50/50 between fundamentals on the instrument and musicianship skills such as music theory, sight-reading, sight-singing, playing by ear, and composition or improvisation. For students in a school band or orchestra program, I will work with them on their band music and bring in additional material as enrichment. Read More

I do not adhere to a methodology nor a pedagogy (which to me is a four letter word). I apply a the credo "Song and Wind" to quote the late, great Arnold Jacobs, Principal Tuba of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra during much of their heyday. I combine this musical and airflow based approach with the science of sound production in a pipe (a trumpet) and the physics of human anatomy in producing this sound with nearly zero effort. Read More
