Seems I've always been a teacher, even when I didn't realize it; from my school days as first chair helping other students, through college where I taught for the Southern Nevada School of Music and at Vesleys Music Conservatory, through the time I received my first certified public school teaching position and after that as a business owner with employees, I have been teaching and learning. I have various methods of teaching, all tailored to each students' strengths. However, all students will learn to be musicians and by becoming one, students will develop their personal styles and unique musical signature all while being coached in proper musical training. As each student learns to be a musician, they will also learn purpose in music which is the drive that will allow them to be successful. I also love puzzles and challenges so any musical frustrations brought to me usually turn out to be flipped around to a solution or at least a carefully devised plan to achieve a goal. I have several students that I have helped win auditions and, while I will never promise a successful outcome, it is rare that they will not get into a group if they study with me consistently. I like to learn who my student is before starting anything. I want to know what their interests are and what their view on music is. I then take that and bond with them and teach them in a certain way that matches their thoughts and personalities the best. I like to have fun and not be too strict as long as the student is doing their work, but if they are not staying on track the fun is replaced with more focus on concepts to be sure they are learning what is needed. For my beginners, we focus heavily on creating familiarity with the horn by fostering an environment of healthy habits. Our primary concern with beginners is being comfortable enough with the horn to be i complete control of the demands asked at this level.
