My teaching style is to MAKE IT FUN. No punishment. I encourage my students to play or sing whatever they want with my help for the structure. At one point 10 years ago when I was teaching a student theory, she completely shut down and wanted no longer to take piano lessons because of the difficulty of it. Teachers may use similar tools, as means to teach a lesson, but how those tools are used will vary from mentor to mentor, and student to student. I have been a music educator in the public schools for over 40 years having taught in Austin, Texas and currently in Fort Worth, Texas. Many of my students have gone to play their instruments in college bands throughout the state. Several former students are currently teaching music at the secondary and college level.
