I will start youbg beginner students with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. As the student progresses, I will introduce solo literature appropriate for their skill level. For older beginners, I will assess their interests in order to keep them interested in their new instrument. It was a great honor. Late into highschool I was accepted at the DCI CADETS for 3rd trumpet part. This is the second best drum corp (at the time) in the world out of over a dozen different division 1 corps. Every student is different, so my teaching approach is rarely identical from student to student. Technical training progresses as a student develops motivation through his or her practice habits. I try to encourage practice through journal entry and self-accountability. I also try to make a student's home practice a little more exciting by setting goals and explaining what will be accomplished through achieving these short-term goals. Your child can't always be expected to advance in a teaching system that is the same for everyone. We are as individual as our structural makeup. I like to encourage the students to work on fundamentals. To make this not too dull, I use pop music to help them understand the pitches and rhythm, then work on sound by singing and playing. These will allow students to have a solid foundation and easy to develop further in the future.
