My teaching experience comes from coaching sectionals, and giving private instruction and classes over all-state etudes and solo repertoire to other students during high school. I have been in teaching roles for other students since I was about 14 years old. I believe that even more than my past teaching and mentoring experience, being a dutiful student throughout my life as a trombonist has shaped my ideals on teaching. I believe in the philosophy of and empty cup. My lessons are not built for me to tell the student what to do, but rather learn how they learn and research the best practices for reaching that student. There is no "cookie cutter" method that works for all students, because everyone learns and comprehends a little bit differently. I remain sensitive to that and patient with my students. I will start youbg beginner students with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. As the student progresses, I will introduce solo literature appropriate for their skill level. For older beginners, I will assess their interests in order to keep them interested in their new instrument. For students with more experience, I will assess their skill level and assign exercises to further develop their fundamentals, and assign literature to grow the student's repertoire that will also reinforce their strong points while strengthening other points in their playing.
