My teaching experience has grown tremendously since being a teacher's assistant when I was in high school. I have been consistently involved with teacher music since my graduation from high school in 2007. In the Fort Wayne, IN area, I have worked with marching, jazz, and concert bands with multiple middle and high schools. I also have experience teaching smaller ensembles and private lessons. In my gap year between my bachelor's and master's degrees, I visited a number of elementary and middle schools and worked with students there. At Manhattan School of Music I was a Teaching Artist for both the Arts-in-Education and Distance Learning Programs and have also taught at the Sitka Fine Arts Camp. I taught at Franklin College for three years and have also worked with students at a number of different universities, such as the University of Washington, Pacific Lutheran University, Seattle University, Presbyterian College, and in China at the Sichuan Conservatory of Music and Tsinghua University. Each student is different, and I do not have one way that works for each student. Some students need to play more, and some need to listen and answer questions more, just depends on their personality. I find what works best is getting to know the student on a personal level, seeing how they react from criticism and go from there. I have been teaching privately since 2014, and have taught students with a wide variety of ages and abilities. Watching my students succeed brings me a great sense of satisfaction knowing that they are becoming more confident in their skills. Students of mine have gone on to compete at the District, Area, Region and State level, in addition to gaining admittance to collegiate music degree programs. Age-friendly materials are my favorite to use. For very young pianists I often buy books with lots of color and large print like Kjos's Piano Party. Kjos and Alfred are two of my favorite publishers, but I am willing to work with materials your family may already own. Flashcards are an important tool for many children to become fluent at naming/reading notes. I also like to have students complete written theory assignments, and, to help students from getting bored, I often "reward" them with single pieces of fun sheet music that can be performed for recitals and competitions.
