My teaching experience started when I was in high school I assisted the middle school band director and taught some private trumpet lessons. During my time at Pensacola Christian College, I learned how to teach lessons in brass, woodwind, percussion, and strings. Part of the requirements included student teaching where I taught third grade theory, high school band, private trumpet, and private clarinet lessons. Every student requires a uniquely tailored teaching style, but also they possess a unique set of strengths and "weaknesses" that will be addressed. I do not believe in the "cookie-cutter" approach to teaching. I believe that fundamentals (scales, tuning exercises, lip slurs, technical excecises) are important as these are the key to unlocking the instrument as a means of self-expression, by eliminitating the infamilarity and oddness of the trombone. That being said, I believe that technique should be approached in the most musical way possible, and I strive to teach technique through actual music.  My teachers, as were most successful brass players, were influenced by the legendary tubist of the Chicago Symphony, Arnold Jacobs. Much of this depends on where the student is in their learning progression--if they are just starting out, then I will focus on the fundamentals of good trombone playing, and work with the basic books like Arban's methods for Trombone. I also have used the Hal Leonard series. But as soon as possible, I will move the student into both listening and playing assignments, starting with artists whose transcriptions are more accessible for both range and technique: Curtis Fuller (including transcriptions I created in college, which are really amazing for students), Hal Leonard's JJ Johnson collection, my own recordings and transcriptions, and Etudes for Jazz from Mike Carubia Jack Gale. I believe each of us learn differently; for some students I find that they are very hands on and prefer that I show them how to do something and then allow them to perfect it others I find that they need a little more guidance and need me to go at a slower pace but regardless of the student's learning language I take my time to understand where they are and outline a plan to help them exceed to the next level. Everything is set in accordance with the student's needs, aspirations and interests. I will help to create realistic goals and schedules, but at the end the student is the boss. Nothing is imposed, nothing is reached if the student did not ask for it.
