My teaching experience began in college as an arranger, and in assisting staff at Rickards high school in Tallahassee I later became the percussion instructor at Deerfield beach high school, and the brass director at Miami carol city senior high, I am currently the assistant band director, and assistant conductor at Miramar high school. Due to my experience working with multiple grade/age levels, I have learned to carefully fine tune my teaching strategy for each individual student that I work with. At the beginner level I typically work from method books to ensure a solid development of performance fundamentals. I also like to spend a good bit of time establishing successful warm-up and practice routines. I pride myself on my ability to teach not only the standard method book sequences of etudes and exercises for the various instruments, but a curriculum that integrates improvisation and composition at all levels of age and ability. I believe in the importance of personalizing the music-making process and building student confidence in their own abilities to creatively express themselves. As students progress, I like to spend more time teaching music theory and how the harmonies and melodies of pieces actually work together. At this stage the music becomes more difficult and lengthy, so I like to group phrases of the piece in sections until they can be played together cohesively. I like to coincide these with more mature elements of expression that go hand in hand with technique development. Read More
