I always try to ask the student what the scene of a movie would be if they are playing the soundtrack, and get them to convey that when they play. With my wind instrument and percussion students, I like to start with a method book. My favorites include Essential Elements and Standard of Excellence. I find that, especially for younger students, this is a great way to introduce beginner theory while learning to apply it to their playing. I have been band director in the public school system for over 20 years and an adjunct professor in college for several years. Since 1993, I have been teaching private lessons to low brass students ranging from grade 5 through college. Students under my director have been successful in District, All-Region, All-Area, All-State and Texas UIL competitions.
