BA, Pennsylvania State University, Telecommunications Music Related Classes: Popular Music History, Music Theory, Piano
Overview:
I am a 35 year old instructor with a lifelong interest in music. I began playing guitar at age 14. While I earned my Bachelor's degree, I had the opportunity to take American popular music history (dating back to the 1800s), music theory, and piano classes. I also had the opportunity to produce and host my own rock & roll and blues radio show. My favorite thing about playing guitar is playing with other people. Performing is certainly a thrill. I continually learn more about the instrument and music in general, and I hope to pass that knowledge on to you!
EXPERIENCE
I began teaching lessons while I was in college about fifteen years ago. Since that time I have taught informal lessons to friends and family and through Musika. To this day I continue to learn new things about playing the guitar. I encourage students to play what they like to listen to but also learn about the history of today's music and how it has morphed over the past 150 years or so. By learning that progression, students can find some things that have never changed and therefore learn to be timeless. I would also recommend checking out classical music, too.
METHODS USED
For each student, I think it is important to keep a conversational tone throughout the duration of the lessons. The student needs to understand where they want to go and how I plan to get them there. Generally older students will have more specific tastes and goals compared to younger students who are "sponges." However with all students, it is important to start with the fundamentals and go from there. Chords, scales, and music theory are the basic building blocks for my lessons and I use songs to implement and show concrete examples of practical uses.
LESSON STYLE
My philosophy is to keep it simple and stress that the more you put into it, the more you will get out of it. Learning and building off small successes will translate to a greater appreciation for music and eventually expand your musical horizons. For me, seeing students understand, improve and have fun is the best part. I have found that guitar has a steep learning curve in that it can be very difficult in the beginning but once you have most of the basics down and you can learn most things you like to listen to, it becomes a continually enriching experience.
