I hold a Masters of Music (sacred music) from Duquesne University and a Bachelor's of Music from West Virginia University (summa cum laude) and regularly perform as a soloist in opera, oratorio, concerts, and recitals and completed training through the Ezio Pinza Concil for American Singers of Opera in Italy, the American Singers' Opera Project of North Carolina, and the American Institute of Musical Studies in Graz, Austria.
I hold a full voting membership in the National Association of Teachers of Singing, am a Licensed Kindermusik Educator, and am employed as Director of Music Ministry for a fairly large church. I was also a teaching artist at Propel East Charter School for Greensburg American Opera and directed the Old Economy Singers (a twenty-voice historical choir) for six years.

Overview:
I am a full-time pedagogue/performer with ten years' experience teaching private lessons in voice and piano to a range of ages and levels of students. Although the majority of my students are young adults, I have worked successfully with children, teenagers, and adult students (twenties to senior citizens) of both genders; I tailor my approach specifically to the goals and interests of each student. No two people are alike, no two people learn the same way. As a teaching artist, I am a firm advocate of remaining active as both a musician and a teacher.
EXPERIENCE
As a teacher, I completed a year-long vocal pedagogy course with Cynthia Bess which provided me with a thorough understanding of the anatomy and psychology of singing, as well as a systematic approach to the correction of vocal faults. In the spring of 2010, one of my students, a teen-aged boy, was selected to attend Eastman's summer program for high school students. Other students have successfully auditioned for admission as music majors and minors at local universities. Many of my students have performed leading roles in school, community, and university musical productions throughout the tri-state area.
METHODS USED
My vocal teaching method focuses on correct breathing and resonance and is based on the Italian bel canto school of classical singing; I also incorporate some activities from Barry Green's "Inner Game of Music" technique. Although my teaching is grounded in a scientific approach to the process of phonation, I also believe singing should be a fun experience for the student. We sing to communicate!
My piano teaching method incorporates repertoire study, technical exercises, and strength-building work. I use a variety of method books (including Schaum, Alfred, and Bastien) as well as supplemental theory workbooks; the specific materials are chosen based on the student's abilities and learning style. Advanced piano students are assigned repertoire from a variety of major composers from a range of time periods, scales, arpeggios, octaves, and technical exercises by Hanon and Czerny.
As an organ teacher, I use both the Leupold and Davis method books, as well as hymn and/or performance repertoire tailored to the student's interests and abilities.
LESSON STYLE
I provide professional, knowledgeable, and individualized instruction in a supportive and encouraging environment. During the course of study with me, I expect students will improve technique and sound quality, alleviate physical tension which may be interfering with their performance, learn new repertoire, increase confidence, and grow as performing artists.
I believe that a thorough technical foundation is necessary for free and healthy music making in any genre of music. I am willing to work with students in the styles that interest them most; although my professional performance experience is in opera, musical theatre, classical piano, and sacred music, I have also successfully worked with students whose interests included jazz, pop, rock, folk music, contemporary Christian music, and choral singing.
