Overview:
I am a very passionate and motivated voice and piano teacher with a very broad music education in vocal performance, piano performance, accompanying, music education, musical theatre and conducting.  I am solidly classically trained in standard repetoire but teach church music, jazz, and theatre and pop music as well.  I am a conductor of school, church, and community choirs and a professional member of NATS and MTNA. I have the very best to offer my students and have good experience with special needs. In addition, I am an expert in vocal technique, vocal health and fixing vocal problems including speaking. My home studio is in Gaithersburg, MD near Washingtonian Rio, and I have an expanding studio in North Pole, Alaska, and teach lessons by Skype for long distance students.
EXPERIENCE
I am a seasoned teacher of over 24 years. I've taught both in public school and privately.  I teach students of all ages and levels.  I have a solid classical background but am well rounded in using a variety of styles to enhance students' enjoyment, learning, and appreciation of music. My personal pleasure is in church music, musical theatre, and jazz.  I design lessons to meet students needs and goals.  With a specialty in vocal health I can help voice students solve vocal problems and learn correct mechanics in singing to create the most confidence and beauty in singing.  I offer extras to my students in the way of master classes, recitals, and competitions to enhance their experience.
METHODS USED
My method is to learn the students' "learning style" and choose materials that suit that style, to strengthen their strengths and work on their weaknesses.  I use tried and true methods that work for thorough comprehensive teaching. Reading, theory, technique, musicianship, and performance are all a focus. I teach students 4-80 with varying needs, including special needs. Materials are recommended for each student to purchase. All lesson plans are customized for each student. An introductory lesson is available.
LESSON STYLE
Learning about my students is essential to adapting the lesson to them.  Using student goals, we create a rewarding path of learning that is structured, and my students are able to see progress toward those goals.  A student centered style and approach that both challenges and nurtures is what I find successful. I am nurturing and kind, encourage, but do not pressure, challenge, but name the student feel good about the self and their efforts. I am very structured and encourage discipline in practice strategies.

She is really great! I have been singing all my life, but little did I realize that my technique was so off! Donna has been great at teaching me and working with me where I'm at... After just a few lessons I can hear a big difference!

Mrs. Donna H. is amazing! She's patient yet stern and she genuinely cares about the development of her students. My daughter is only 5 years old and she meets her where she is. We absolutely love her!

Donna is very knowledgeable and patient. I've already learned some great techniques to improve my voice and breathing. I plan to continue my lessons with her.
