Our music lesson students will have the opportunity to take lessons from the comfort of their own home or in one of the teachers studios. Careful attention is placed on each student to ensure a custom lesson plan. My teaching style places emphasis on relationship building, knowledge grabbing and demonstration. Developing a relationship includes relatability, comfort & communication. Here humor is used. Smiles & laughs always lessens the stress & makes learning enjoyable. In addition, time-management and the setting of daily goals together encourages the info retention. My teaching experience goes back to 1980. I began teaching private students in a local music studio. During my college years, I was a Graduate Assistant. I don't believe in a one size fits all mentality for music education, I've often seen this approach derail students from enjoying the process and eventually terminating their relationship with music overall. Students are a case-by-case basis, and in that regard, each lesson is catered to the students actual goals and interests. I believe in training our ears and our sense of rhythm to a point where the student can figure things out and make artistic decisions on their own and use lessons, less as a tutorial, but as a source of inspiration to pursue the things that brought them here in the first place. This might include taking a solo to contest, performing a recital, working on marching band or concert band music, or any other musical outlet. Based on the desires of the student, I can tailor my lessons to suite them personally. Guitar: for beginners, I typically turn to Mel Bays Method books. Once fundamentals are established, I want to learn what styles, bands, and artists the student likes. Having taken lessons on several instruments and being self-taught on others I understand that the most important thing a teacher can instill in their student is 1) the basic knowledge to understand the instrument, and 2) the passion to discover and teach themselves. After all, discovery is a far more effective teacher than instruction. I believe it is my job to guide a student onto the right track with a basic knowledge-base, and teach them to love music.
