Careful attention is placed on each student to ensure a custom lesson plan. I do tailor my music lessons for the individual student. There really is no making a general statement for a specific person. There are, however, some very fundamental aspects of learning music for all people which will definitely include practicing and mastering scales of all type, performing with others, and using the ears to truly listen to intervals and the emotions that are invoked by performing certain keys in specific styles. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. Private lessons are tailored to the needs of each individual. In general, we will focus on tonal and technical development through scales, repertoire, long tones, and other exercises. We will use etudes as well as pieces to learn about history and music theory. Students will work on not only their performance skills, but aural development as well. The next "T" stands for transcriptions, where I assign a student songs or solos that they will transcribe by ear in order to strengthen ear training and make them critically listen to the style they're trying to emulate. For example, I might assign a beginner jazz student the easy Johnny Hodges solo on "Big Shoe." Last but not least, the final "T" stands for tunes.
