Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at their own pace. I try to make sure that fundamentals are always maintained and that the music we are covering in lessons is stimulating and challenging while still being enjoyable for the student so that they can develop musical expression along with a strong technical foundation. Because I don't have a set template that all students follow, I believe that my constant assessment and evaluation of students needs is effective in making sure that each student's passion is nurtured and developed. As a musician myself, I enjoy the cooperative element of music so I readily have an instrument around that I can play along with the student to help further innate musicianship for all skill levels of instrumentalists. For beginners I enjoy using Standards of Excellence from Kjos publishing or Sound Innovations from Alfred publishing and custom tailor exercises to fit the strengths and challenges of every student I teach. My teaching experience dates back to my college days, as I began teaching private lessons part time 40 years ago, and have been consistently teaching students in my home studio for the last 20 years. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument. I am a motivated musician, with a passion for performing and a desire to pass on that passion and a love of music to students of all ages. I am a graduate of Norfolk State University, where I received a Bachelors of Music degree in Music Media with a minor in Piano. My program combined classical saxophone training with, contemporary performance, and modern media outlets. During college I was a member and section leader of the University Marching band, as well as, the principle alto saxophonist (a.k.a. first chair) for both the symphonic band and jazz ensemble. For beginning students, I start with the Essential Elements book. If the student has already taken lessons or is in their school band/orchestra, I encourage moving onto the Rubank Elementary, Intermediate, and Advanced method books depending on ability. Once a student has proven that they are able to handle it, I will start on solo repertoire. Particularly for college-bound musicians who wish to major in music, the majority of their lessons will be based on preparing solo literature for All District or college auditions. Read More
