I like to use piano methods that employ the multi-key and intervallic approach to teaching piano. Alfred's Piano Method nicely blends these two methods. To keep book costs down, the Alfred's All-in-One Piano Method (children's or adult's) is a good choice for beginning students. Alfred's method is also used by many universities and community colleges, so what you learn will nicely carry over to that environment. I start lessons with a quick interview so I can get an idea of what you want with your singing, not only technically I.e. range, projection, pitch etc, but also personal goals, being better at karaoke or sounding your best in a recording studio and everything in between. We then go over basic vocal exercises, the principles of singing, any tension I see encumbering your vocal production. My philosophy is that everyone is musical to some degree and that anyone can be taught to play music. Not everyone can be taught the same way, however, and it takes a highly skilled, creative, intuitive and patient teacher to do that. I customize my teaching to the student.  I use several different method books depending on the age, ability and learning style of the student.
