As a youngster, I had many negative experiences learning in government schools, resulting from teachers who in retrospect were clearly knowledgeable, but lacking in skills at communicating their knowledge to a wide range of individuals. For beginning students, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements as I believe it the most comprehensive lesson guide for fundamentals. I do also on occasion utilize the Suzuki method for my string students in addition to EE. Every lesson begins with tuning and scales which helps train the ear and prepare students for the lesson at hand. From there we will go through the pieces as written. I teach music differently. When learning a skill, consistency equals success. Lessons have to be engaging, personalized and fun. When teaching my students, I find out what music they love, their favorite songs and artists. I find out what music they would love to learn. Then I let that guide my instruction by teaching the students songs they want to learn (while teaching chords, theory and ways to improve) starting with the easier songs to keep it fun and engaging. My teaching experience dates back to my younger years where I first started teaching kids ranging from the age of five years old to 10 years old in large groups. This taught me a great deal of concentration diligence and patients which I can think and has aided me in my teaching skills today. I have taught several lesson plans in the Washoe County School district and successfully completed a 14 week internship teaching orchestra at Depoali MS and McQueen HS.
