For beginning piano students, I use Alfred's basic Piano Library. This works well with young children as it has colorful pictures and easy to understand language. For Adults who are just starting to learn piano I like Alfred's basic Adult Piano Course. This course comes with audio CD's to accompany the student each step of the way. It makes it fun. For beginning students, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements as I believe it the most comprehensive lesson guide for fundamentals. I do also on occasion utilize the Suzuki method for my string students in addition to EE. Every lesson begins with tuning and scales which helps train the ear and prepare students for the lesson at hand. From there we will go through the pieces as written. I love helping people learn music. I honestly believe that anyone can play an instrument with some work and everyone has a song to share. In 2012, I graduated from the University of Hawaii with a Bachelors Degree in Music Business. Again, as stated above, my approach is based on the proven CAGED system, and stresses mastery of the basics, using the language and concepts of "classical", jazz and blues -in particular. I begin by establishing what students (already) know and don't know about music and their chosen instruments, making connections between pre-existing knowledge and concepts, and "filling in holes" -while teaching these basics. Then, as soon as students are able, we begin applying this knowledge -these concepts- to their preferred musical mediums -in addition to "branching out" to apply basic knowledge/concepts/skills to increasingly more advanced applications.
