For every student I always start with the basics. What are the basics? Well, first and most important for getting you started is open chords. That along with pentatonic scales will really help to develope finger dexterity and get the student adjusted to proper hand and finger positioning on the guitar. My method of teaching involves first exploring where my students interests are. I think it is important to discuss and examine why it is you want to learn to play guitar in the first place! For brand new beginners I would typically start by learning various beginner chords. The next step would be to practice scales and different techniques.
