For adult students I seek to find what the students is most interested in (classical, jazz, rock, bass nova, etc.), and then go from there in terms of finding repertoire and creating my own custom lessons plans, centered around the student's goals. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with a method book geared specifically for children.
