My teaching experience dates back to my college days, as I began teaching private lessons part time 40 years ago, and have been consistently teaching students in my home studio for the last 20 years. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument. My teaching began in the first year of my undergraduate degree. I was hired on as an adjunct to coach sectionals for a small school who later went on to get high marks on their marching assessment that year. I begin by first, of course, meeting with the students and talking to them and learning what they wish to achieve from their lessons with me as well as their level of playing at that current moment. After this first initial meeting and lesson I begin to help the student improve, working with them to achieve higher standards of performance at his or her own pace. All of my bands received first division and second division ratings at festivals and my students received first and second division ratings at individual solo and ensemble festivals.
