After receiving my jazz performance degree from Rutgers University in 2010, I put together a studio of several dedicated students in New Jersey while performing in the New York Metro area with ensembles ranging from big bands to funk and soul groups. My teaching style is very unique in that its based off improvisation and ear training with music theory lessons. Having just one of the three is a great skill, but developing an ability to read, play and improvise music is what, in my opinion, makes a great musician. I have found that the most effective way for me to teach is to activate the student's self-motivation, rather than trying to serve as external motivation. We will spend some time discussing the student's goals, whether they are concrete or abstract. I understand that many students have different styles of practicing! For some of my students, we ran lessons like they were drill sessions, and for others, the lessons were all about taking a deeper look into the piece itself and going through passages separately to personalize the performance. Since lessons are tailored to the individual student's goals, it's going to be a little more laid back. Success is measured differently for each student. It is, however indescribably rewarding when the student suddenly "get's it."  When the things you've been teaching all come together and they're no longer playing note, but they're making music.  I'll admit, it's because of this that beginners are really my favorites to work with.
