For beginning students I like to use a combination of Rubank's Elementery etudes and a privately owned beginner's method book although I am willing to teach from a variety of beginning resources. I take into consideration that each student learns differently and some methods may be more successful than others. I like to start introducing solo repertoire as soon as the basics are down. For more advanced students I like to use Lisa Garner Santa's Flute Theory Workout along with advanced solo repetoire and advanced Eubanks etudes. Read More

I'm a passionalte and motivated flute instructor who loves working with students of all ages. I am committed to shaaring my love of music with all my students. I earned my Bachelor of Arts degree from California State University in 1989. Until that time, I was a member of the local symphony as well as playing in other symphonies, musical theater, private events, chamber groups, etc. I then moved to Dallas, TX where I attended and graduated from Southern Methodist University with a master's in Music Education and Flute Performance. In high school I had the great privilege of being selected as the Principal clarinetist in the Minnesota All-State Band. We performed at the summer camp designed for these groups and recreated our performance at Orchestra Hall, home of the Minnesota Orchestra, the following spring. Clarinet is my primary instrument and first love. I also teach saxophone and beginning flute and hope to add other woodwinds in the future. I believe that everything begins with fundamentals. That being said, it's most important to learn what the students goal is. Perhaps they only want to learn a particular piece that they are playing for Solo and Ensemble Contest. Perhaps it's an adult student that just wants to learn to play a particular piece for a special occasion. Lessons have to be tailored to to meet the individual students desires.
