I believe that all students learn differently, even from the first time they play an instrument. I like to take the first lesson to learn more about my students and see if they have any prior knowledge about reading, playing, hearing and/or practicing music. I usually guide my beginner flute, clarinet, and saxophone students to the Essential Elements book, but also include some other simple repertoire and practice techniques that will fit what they need. From there we learn simple songs -- sometimes by ear, and sometimes by reading music (both are valuable skills to have). From there we learn how those songs we learned are built. This is the theory part. Once a student has a rudimental understanding of theory they can begin to compose their own songs! When this is done spontaneously people refer to it as improvisation, but don't let the names fool you. Read More

I have been an active performer, composer, and educator for the last 15 years of my life recently serving as Artist in Residence at Penn State's Altoona campus. Alongside performing in the Philadelphia area I have been a guest lecturer and artist for The University of the Arts in 2014 and 2015. Read More

I am just a guide in the process of their musical and characteristic developments. Because of this, I like to create custom lesson plans based on the student's needs. I believe it is important to know what the student wants to accomplish. If the student would like a more traditional style lesson, I have a variety of method books that I like to use.--Below are some examples of methods that I like for the flute:--Beginners: Essential Elements (I have found that this series is just one of the best out there for young musicians that are just getting started!) I would also add in short solo pieces to develop tone.--Intermediate: Mel Bay The Flutist's Companion with additional work on duets, rhythm worksheets, and solo and ensemble preparation.--Advanced: Trevor Wye Practice Books Omnibus Edition with work in sight reading, orchestral excerpts, solo pieces, duets, and ensemble practice. My experiences with teaching start back with when I was in High School. I slowly started picking up beginner flute and piano students and realized how much I loved teaching music.During my time at Millersville University I have taken multiple methods courses to help advance my teaching. I have taken methods courses starting from percussion all the way to woodwinds and learned about basic beginner instruction.Like I said before I have been playing flute for the past 14 years as well as piano for the past 8 years.
