For children and other beginners, I would start our lessons by encoding the basic function of music theory application of a drum pad. This will allow stick control and muscle memory to begin developing. As the beginner becomes more of a novice, I will introduce simple and repetitive songs and go over them as whole pieces. With new students taking their 1st lesson, I, with the student, set a realistic long term goal for the year. We then make short term goals to as the steps to take to meet this long term goal. After that I am able to plan my lessons with each student more accurately so that the time per lesson is fully utilized.
