I am an instructor who is passionate and motivated about both music and teaching. While working on a degree in Psychology at Grand Valley State University in Michigan, I also studied music theory and other musical topics. I began playing bass guitar around 1978 and have played in bands, done session work and given music lessons in Michigan and the midwest ever since. I focus on the student's preferred genre and songs, and I make theory work for those particular songs; i.e. I find common chord progressions, their related scales, and have students improvise using those scales [though I emphasize chord tones, syncopation and more ... equally, not just scales]). I am the epitome of patience, and I always seek to reassess a student's goals so as to hit the target as ideally on as possible (no sense in learning the complexity of jazz when punk rock is your only love!). As a foundation, I start my beginner-level students with basic the basic understanding of rhythm patterns, dynamic control, and basic limb independence. I use Benny Greb's "The Language of Drumming" as it has proven to be a fun and effective learning tool for well over a decade. From there it's really dependent on the student and their learning style/pace.
