I began teaching as a student at OSU, then started teaching shortly after moving to California. I have been fortunate to have experience teaching students both individually and in group settings. My private students have been of all ages and different levels. One commonality I have found between students in these different settings is that they all have different goals and things that motivate them. I also discovered that I had a talent for making my students feel very relaxed during their lessons. I began to go beyond just teaching from one page to the next and started to explore the creative process of creating interesting lessons that would challenge, encourage, and engage, as my teaching style would always be adjusted and adapted to perfectly fit my students' individual learning styles. Since relocating to Northern California in 1999, I have continued to work with a diverse range of ensembles and am currently teaching at two music studios, conducting clinics at local schools, and running a number of small and large group ensembles, including woodwind quintets, sax quartets, jazz combos, and experimental music groups. In addition to all of the technical aspects of playing an instrument, the greatest asset a musician has is their musical concept of sound. I had to create "wiggle room" for following his joy whilst remaining instructionally relevant. Other students require more structure, have different musical passions, etc. so I follow that accordingly and when required draft precise, singular goal oriented lesson plans.
