I continued to work with beginning and intermediate students throughout college teaching everything from beginning instruction to jazz improvisation. I don't believe in lesson plans that don't allow flexibility and providing the students with opportunities to pick repertoires they are interested in. I prefer for my younger students to focus very strongly on the development of sound and technical dexterity. It will prove with time that this first step is the most important! I started playing the piano in college and have learned to play many instruments in my career. I was an Elementary school teacher for 20 years teaching music, band, English Language Arts, Science, and History. I guess you could say I've had a great deal of experience with children as well as adults and still enjoy working with kids in my studio. My methodology is inspired by the Suzuki method, which believes that learning music is similar to how humans learn to speak first, and write later. In the end, music is a type of language.
