Each one of my students receives highly individualized and personalized lesson plans. I work closely with the student (and/or their parent) to discuss their goals and aspirations for clarinet lessons. I like to begin all my students on a combination of technical studies and enjoyable/familiar melodies. This will help them learn the fundamentals in a rewarding way, because as they progress they will continue to learn new songs week after week. This is much more rewarding than checking of series of technical exercises. Additionally it is important to have both small goals to achieve each week and large goals to achieve over a number of months, so my students can be aware and proud of their progress over time. As a teacher, there is nothing more rewarding than seeing a student develop a passion for music. If my students do not leave every lesson feeling inspired, encouraged, and wanting to practice and play music, then I am not doing my job. Just as I tailor each lesson to match the individual student, expect the student to grow and develop as a musician at his/her own pace. I like to demonstrate concepts by modeling so the student knows what they are supposed to sound and look like. I will sometimes play to give an example or send a link to a recording to help the student. I encourage students to go at their own pace.
