I strive to instill a passion for music within my students. It is important that each student progresses at their own pace and always walks away with something new. I sit realistic goals for each lesson; this allows the student to feel accomplished and satisfied. Acknowledging a student's growth and accomplishments builds a student's fire to progress. Read More

My style largely depends on the student and his/her needs and interests. I enjoy using rewards-based encouragement, especially for younger students. The rewards I give are always musical and I usually let the student choose. I will ask the student for their goals and what they wish to accomplish by taking lessons. Once we establish a goal we can work on attaining that goal. During lessons I find it useful for students to learn some basic music theory as it helps understanding patterns that can be applied to the clarinet. I strongly focus on fundamentals especially when teaching younger players. My style of teaching is to prepare students for auditions and solo and ensemble festival. Read More

Typically in the first lesson, I assess the playing level of the student by asking them general questions about what they have done with music so far. From there it is easy for me to determine what to begin teaching first. For beginner students, I like to start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements book. If the student has graduated from the beginner book, then I can proceed to intermediate or advanced methods which will include a combination of studies in pedagogy, repertoire, composers, etudes, ensemble work, and technical studies. I began my teaching experience in 2016, when I began work as a band camp instructor during my student teaching semester in college. Since then, I have served as a high school band director for three years before stepping away to pursue other musical opportunities. Despite leaving my position as a band director, I still remain active as an educator. I continue to work with several different programs in Kentucky and Ohio, where I teach clarinet lessons, marching band and drum corps, and jazz ensembles. Read More
