If the students already had books from prior music instructor, we pick up from the last lessons after answering questions to make sure the students thoroughly understand the previous lessons from the previous chapters. Over the years, I've learned that every single student learns differently in addition to going at their own pace. Anyone at any age CAN learn music! I've found that presenting multiple solutions to varying problems gives the students the best chance to succeed and it's not that someone cannot learn, they just haven't been presented with an explanation they can understand and clicks for them. Once these become ingrained in the student's mind, I will introduce various excerpts based on their skill level, eventually working our way into solo repertoire. For students that have a few years under their belt, I prefer to get a grasp on what their strength and weaknesses are to assess what I can be of service, to select the solo or excerpt book that would best help improve their already developing talents.
