I started teaching friends various instruments and general music theory as a freshman. Then I continued my teaching with tutoring my fellow bass students with more difficult material. Now, after having graduated from Rowan University, I teach with the Resonance School of Music teaching guitar, clarinet electric bass and upright bass. While Resonance is certainly a more traditional approach, I like to think I balance it out by also teaching at a School of Rock, giving instruction on both guitar and electric bass. Read More

For beginner students, I start with teaching them the foundational clarinet skills including: embouchure, breathing, tonguing, and music theory. I then proceed to teach them the chromatic and major scales as well as arpeggios. I typically have students start off with working through the Essential Elements for Band and Rubank books. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance or audition piece. Read More

For beginning students, I typically use a combination of methods. For clarinet teaching, I like to use the Breeze-Easy method and also some materials from the Rubank method books. For intermediate or school-aged students, I like to supplement the material they are learning in school. I like to continue to use Rubank, Klose, and Rose books to continue to develop technique and musicality. I began playing piano for church choirs in my hometown. During my college years, my private lessons experience began when I would give pointers to my fellow music majors who had to pass piano proficiency as part of their degree requirement. Furthermore, I am from the school of thought of concentrated practice. I help students identify the length of time they can concentrate without exhausting their attention. I tailor my lessons to meet each student's individual needs. I work to balance the time between challenging exercises they may struggle with, and fun playing they can enjoy and excel at. I frequently discuss goals with students, such as "we will work towards being about to play 8 measures without taking a breath" or "within two months we will be able to comfortably play up to high-C." I frequently remind them how much they should be practicing, and we always check in each lesson to see how we are progressing towards our goals. Read More
