I started taking cello lessons over the summer before 6th grade, and played in the ensemble at my middle school and high school, continuing lessons throughout. I have also participated in solo and ensemble events through the schools. I have never taught before, as it is only now something I have to start doing, but I am excited to begin teaching others. I started my own studio at the age of 23. I found this to be one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. In 2000, I entered the Music Education program at The University of Memphis. I continue to teach privately. I have taught children as young as 5 to adults of the age of 72. I have also taught string orchestra for 12 years. For beginners  I like to start with the Suzuki Method. But I'm also familiar with other couple methods such as Essential Elements and Essential Techniques for strings book 1-3. In addition to follow a method book, I like to supplement some small pieces from other books as well as incorporate some of the pieces that the student want to learn. Once the student is in the intermediate to advanced level of playing, I like to use the String Basics Book, Carl Flesh Scale Book, Kayser's ,Schradieck, Dont,  Kreutzer's 42 Studies, among others a long with some solo repertoire. My teaching experience is primarily in one on one or small group settings. I have taught several students as young as 10 years old. It is my experience that a student's approach to their instrument varies with their age. The more time one spends with an instrument, the more one expects to have a certain sound. I believe it is important to emphasize not comparing oneself to others. This goes hand and hand with my approach to teaching in that it focuses on the individual wants and needs of the student. As I have previously stated, I tailor my lessons to each individual student in order to maximize their learning potential. Yes, I do usually assign one piece that will be good for them to learn even if it is not their favorite song to play, but the rest of the time I make sure that it is music they are going to enjoy.
