I have a "less talk, more play" approach to music. People learn instruments because they want to play music, and that is always the focus in my lessons. While some instructors incessantly talk about theory, history, and other music concepts, I prefer to keep the talking to a minimum and have my students play their instrument as much as possible. After high school, I became a music teacher at a bilingual school, working there and gaining experience in teaching while working with students ranging from the ages of 7 to 11 during 2 years, as well as functioning as the principal cellist of the Honduran Philharmonic. While still in my country, I gave private lessons to several young people from different ages and levels and after I came here to college, I became a mentor of various cello students in a summer children music festival, as well as having private cello students. While I have a general curriculum, I am very flexible and try to adjust to my every student individually. Generally I like to employ books by Suzuki, as I find them very methodical, as well as easily accessible. I supplement the Suzuki books by Alwin Schroeder's 170 foundation studies, and lots of scales and technical exercises. I encourage active listening and work with a student to build confidence performing. For younger beginners, I like to start with a method book such as Essential Elements to build the foundations of music and the instruments. After students have worked through this, we begin working on solo repertoire to get students excited to perform songs at their first recital! This is also a great time to begin learning about improvisation and creative playing, something that we all already have within us.
