I began singing solos in church when I was 6 years old. I picked up the guitar when I was 10. At Montevallo, my primary instrument was voice and piano was my secondary instrument. I've been teaching professionally since 1981 -- 37 years as of this writing. My students have gone on to be professionals themseleves, but many of them just enriched their lives with music. I also believe for other students who are serious about what they are trying to do, it can make the difference between parents paying college tuition or my student receiving that money through a scholarship. I live for the "AHA!" moments from my students. There comes a point in every students musical journey where it all snaps together like a puzzle and a new piece of the picture can be seen. "AHA" moments are big deals, and we celebrate them together. Once a student has completed one skill, technique, scale, etc... we move ahead at his or her own pace. Once my student has progressed we begin a steady diet of repetition and exercises designed to help them maintain the knowledge acquired as well as new skills to take them to the next level. For beginning folk/pop guitar students I use the Hal Leonard Guitar Method. For Classical guitar I use a combination of various resources, including Segovia scales, Sor studies, Guilianni right-hand studies and Frederick Noad method books. I definitely encourage students to work towards performance of the music they are working on, and try to schedule recital/performance opportunities as students deveope and gain mastery over their material. I always try to maintain a healthy balance between keeping the student working on music that challenges them,and advances their technique, with the need to have fun and enjoy the playing of a musical instrument as a means of entertainment and relaxation.
