For beginning students who are children, I typically start with a method book geared specifically for children. For the drum set, my preferred approach is a bit like Mr. Miyagi in Karate Kid. We will begin away from the drum set doing isolated hand/foot exercises (will need a practice pad), analyzing together music the student is interested in, and hammering home the importance of a relaxed body and proper posture.
