Overview:
I'm a graduated master degree student in piano performance at Ohio State, studies with Dr. Caroline Hong. I earned my bachelor degree from East China Normal University, under Professor Dingyuan Zhang. I have presented recitals and performance in numerous major cities including Columbus, Innsbruck, Shanghai and Taicang. I'm an active participant in a variety of music festivals and competitions and have won top prizes. I participated in a large amount of master classes from different famous professors, for example, Professor Thomas Kreuzberger from Vienna Music and Performing University of the Art, and Professor Ian Hobson from Florida State University. I have rich experience in teaching for over 7 years. Students cover from beginning to pre-college level. I'm also proficient at conducting chorus and organizing activities.
EXPERIENCE
I started to teach private piano lessons since my freshman year in college, and have been consistently teaching students for the last 7 years. My students cover from beginner to advanced level, ages cover from 4 to 62 years old. All my students are encouraged to participate in any competitions and recitals. The rate of passing piano graded examinations is 100%. Besides experience of teaching private piano lessons, I also had experience in teaching in high school. I taught the music-appreciation class, which includes theatre literature, dance, and music history. I also conducted the school chorus and led the chorus to perform in the annual music festival in school. My teaching concept is that always teaching students to be their own teachers and teach them how to "judge their music by relating it to their own world"---- quote from Keyboard Arts. It's important to instruct students to be correct in learning, but it's even more meaningful to establish their own judgements, motivate their creativity and passion, prepare students to be an exciting music-maker! After all, music is the most delicious cake in the world and we are so welcoming anyone to have a taste of the cake!
METHODS USED
My teaching concept is that always teaching students to be their own teachers and teach them how to "judge their music by relating it to their own world"---- quote from Keyboard Arts. For beginning students who have never learned piano before, I would introduce the structure of the piano first to let them know how and why the instrument works. It's also very important to communicate with students and get to know what they like, what they want to achieve from the lessons, so that I can modify different methods and steps to fit in different students well. For the choices of course books, I will pick up from Faber Piano Adventures, Music for Little Mozart's, Alfred's Premier Piano Course. Later I will choose different solo repertoires for their recital performance. Those are all depend on how fast they grasp the concept. After students have their own judgements, I will leave them to pick up repertoires or even compose their music by themselves. In each lesson, besides checking and correcting the knowledge we learnt from last lesson, I will make sure that students are able to teach themselves and practice by themselves at home before they leave the lesson. Rewards are another part in my lesson. Students from any age and level can get different types of rewards, depends on how much they complete the assignments!
LESSON STYLE
I always believe that a teacher should convey the methods of "angling" instead of "giving the fish" directly to students. It means as a teacher, it's important to instruct students to be correct in learning, but it's even more meaningful to teach them how to teach themselves, establish their own judgements, motivate their creativity and passion, prepare students to be an exciting music-maker! Everyone is different and has their own pace. Helping them to enrich their musical experience is more meaningful than a dull-sounding correction experience. Every choice of repertoire and methods are made depend on students' pace. I'm there to help students accomplish their goals!
