Overview:

Hi everyone!. My name is Young Jun (YJ) and I have been playing the guitar for 13 years. In 2016, I graduated from Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University with a Bachelor in Classical Guitar Performance soon followed by Masters in Classical Guitar Performance at Florida State University in 2018. During the course of my study, I have achieved much success as a performer. I attended numerous competitions and won many of them. I placed first in the John and Susie Beatty Competition in the junior division, senior division, and also received the grand prize. I received first place for four consecutive years in the Aguado Guitar Club Competition, first in the East Carolina University Guitar Competition, and second in the Columbus State University Guitar Symposium. In addition, I had the honor of receiving the Award for Excellence in the Arts from National Society of Arts and Letter. I have also performed all around the country which includes famous venues such as the Kennedy Center, Cosmos Club, Austrian Embassy, and Capitol Hill.

EXPERIENCE

I have been teaching guitar since 2012 to all ages from beginner to professional level. The most notable student to date has won national level competition after eight months of learning the classical guitar and have been accepted with scholarships in top music schools such as Peabody Institute of Music and Rostock University of Music in Germany Based on my previous teaching experience, focusing on classical guitar and its pedagogical method helps the students to build strong techniques, sightreading, and phrasing skills which all can be all applied in other styles of guitar. To get the absolute most out of each lesson, I try to motivate students to practice every day because I find that consistency is the key to success in learning an instrument.

METHODS USED

For young beginner students, I usually begin with the Hal Leonard Guitar Method Book. This book introduces music notation as well as divided into small chunks for young kids to understand and retain. For older beginner students, I also refer often to Aaron Shearer Learning Classic Guitar as it is more text heavy and explains in-depth for students to have a strong understanding. Once students finish learning the fundamentals from the book, I present them with various solo pieces and technique exercises to go along with it. I try my best to provide students with multiple pieces to choose from within their skill level because learning a piece that students don't like can take away the fun part of learning the guitar.

LESSON STYLE

My teaching style focuses on classical fundamentals as well as making sure to guide my student down the right path of learning the guitar properly in order to achieve strong foundations, avoid injuries, and be efficient. For younger students, learning the guitar may be just because they find it "cool" or "my parents made me choose an instrument." But for older students, this can be a life time hobby or a form of self-identity. Mastering piece by piece is a very gratifying experience and with enough practice + proper guidance, one day, you will be able to simply grab the guitar next to you and learn/play your favorite music. I love what I do and I hope to share it with all my students. If you or your child are willing to learn, I promise you that I will put extra effort and care into my lessons.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
