I'm a film director and writer, a recent graduate in pursuit of a goal. I'm the first student from my undergrad institution (Montana State University) to attend the prestigious American Film Institute Conservatory in over 30 years. Though a writer/director, my first passion in life was music. I've played music since I was 6 years old. It has taken me all over the country through fiddle competitions, festivals, jams, etc. Many of my fondest memories from childhood are centered on those days of traveling to and from festivals in places I had never heard of. Indeed, those long days gone by, playing music well into every night, have formed who I am today.
I began teaching music in 2008 to help support my way through college in Montana. I love to help nourish and guide a person along towards a goal. It's the same principal that applies to my work as a film director - I'm always trying to get the best out of everybody. I have taught students from the age of 4 to the age of 70, and have observed marked improvement in everybody I've ever taught, simply because I try to make them feel that learning an instrument is not "work" or a "job" , it is a passage that will allow one greater understanding of themselves and the world around them. Music as enlightenment. Music as storytelling.
I don't have any set methods of teaching. I alter my methods around the personality of each student. I do, however, try to teach by ear as I believe that will allow one to unlock the true potential of their musical gifts.
As stated above, I try to make students hungry for practice and to feel that the pursuit of a mastery of music is an enriching experience on a deeply personal level. I'm calm, gentle, very easy to talk to. I have great patience for students and realize how frustrating learning an instrument can be sometimes. It is also worth noting that I teach Fiddle (Blu-grass, oldtime, Texas style), Guitar (primarily rhythmn guitar), and Mandolin.
